James Purdy 1990 tv conversation

James Purdy died friday, March 13th 2009.

It prompted me to retrieve, convert and clip a video I have of a tv conversation that I recorded on VHS tape nearly twenty years ago. James Purdy was a guest at Adriaan van Dis’ talk show. In the audience were his publishers Johan Polak and Ad ten Bosch.

The introduction is in Dutch, the conversation is in English with Dutch subtitles.

Some James Purdy quotes from the conversation:

“New York has collapsed”

“The New York Times Review of Books is toilet paper. Used.”

(On homosexuality / heterosexuality): “There is no such thing.”

“In a competitive society, the thing people fear most is love.”

“There is no American public. I would rather have an audience.”
